What are umbrella species?

When we protect umbrella species, and the areas they live in, we protect thousands of other species at the same time!

Elephants are umbrella species, but what does that mean? 🐘☂️
It’s species with specific needs that indirectly benefit animals and plants that live in their proximity. One talks about the umbrella effect – when we protect an umbrella species, we thereby protect several other species.
An umbrella species can be both animals and plants – the most well-known are giant pandas, elephants and jaguars. What characterizes them is (mainly) their need for large areas to find food and suitable mates. The larger space they need, the more animals and plants benefit from the protection created for them. 🌳
By protecting rhinos and elephants, we contribute to the protection of thousands of other species. That, we like! 🙌
